When I need an afternoon boost more and more often I find myself reaching for matcha. With a vibrant green color, a rich taste and loads of antioxidants its no surprise that matcha has become popular and is even better when naturally sweetened with maple syrup. Creamy, cozy and healthy this Maple Matcha Latte may just become your new favorite afternoon pick-me-up.

What is Matcha?

Matcha is a powdered green tea made from the tea plant Camellia sinensis. Dating back to the 11th century in China matcha became popular with Zen Buddhist monks who then brought the practice to Japan. Today tea grown for matcha is shade grown, which stimulates the production of chlorophyl. This results in matcha’s signature bright green color, rich flavor and high level of antioxidants.

Traditionally matcha is prepared in a ceremonial manner, utilizing a tea bowl with a wooden whisk (known as a chasen), whisking in a M pattern to fully incorporate the matcha powder and produce a smooth, foamy texture. Today match has gained popularity worldwide and can be found in lattes(like this one), smoothies and smoothie bowls (take a look at my Matcha Ginger Smoothie Bowl),cakes, ice cream and other desserts.

What kind of milk to use in a matcha latte?

Maple Matcha Latte

To make this matcha latte you can really use any kind of milk you like! I typically use either dairy milk or an almond/coconut milk blend since that’s what I have on hand, though any common plant based milk like almond, oat or macadamia milk would be delicious.

How to Make a Maple Matcha Latte

Maple Matcha Latte

Unless you wish to perform a traditional matcha tea ceremony you don’t need any special equipment for this matcha latte. In place of a bamboo whisk you can use a small whisk, a milk frother or even a fork to combine the matcha and hot water.

To make this matcha latte heat the milk in a medium saucepan until it just starts to bubble. Remove from heat, and if desired, froth with a handheld milk frother (this latte is perfectly tasty if you don’t use foamed milk as well). Place matcha powder, hot water, maple syrup and vanilla extract( if using) in a small bowl and whisk to combine. Transfer matcha mixture to a mug and add the frothed milk. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired.
