My Cranberry Pistachio Cheese Ball is an easy holiday appetizer perfect for Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, or Christmas. Made with just a handful of ingredients, it combines a mix of cream cheese and cheddar cheese, dried cranberries, and crunchy pistachios in one festive bite. It’s simple to prepare ahead of time, making it a delicious addition to your holiday appetizer spread.

I love a holiday appetizer that looks impressive but doesn’t keep me stuck in the kitchen, and this Cranberry Pistachio Cheese Ball checks all the boxes. Cream cheese and sharp white cheddar create a rich, creamy base, while Dijon mustard adds a tangy bite.

The coating is a mix of chopped pistachios and dried cranberries and this festive combo makes it feel right at home on a Thanksgiving menu or Christmas appetizer spread. Cooking Tips

  • Use softened cream cheese. I like to let my cream cheese soften a bit before getting started. It blends much more easily with the cheddar and Dijon mustard for a smoother texture
  • Shred your own cheddar. For the best texture, I recommend shredding a block of sharp white cheddar rather than reaching for the pre-shredded stuff. It blends more smoothly into the cream cheese and gives the cheese ball plenty of sharp, savory flavor.
  • Change up the flavors: subsitute  goat cheese for the cream cheese or add a bit of orange zest or fresh herbs like chives or thyme to the cheese mixture. You could also switch up the coating by switching out the pistachios for almonds, walnuts or pecans.
  • Chop the coating into small pieces. Take a minute to roughly chop the cranberries and pistachios before coating the cheese ball. Smaller pieces are easier to press into the surface and make every bite a little more balanced
  • Chill before adding the coating. Don’t skip the chilling time! I chill the cheese mixture in the refrigerator for at least an hour so it has time to firm up. This makes the cheese ball easier to handle and helps it hold its shape when you add the cranberry-pistachio coating.
  • Make it ahead. One of my favorite things about this appetizer is that you can get a head start before guests arrive. Shape the cheese ball a day ahead, wrap it tightly, and refrigerate. Add the cranberry and pistachio coating shortly before serving to keep it looking fresh and festive.
  • Change the shape: You can form the cheese mixture into a cheese log if you prefer
  • Drizzle with honey: a gentle drizzle of your favorite honey or hot honey adds a bit of sweetness

How to Make a Cranberry Pistachio Cheese Ball

1. Blend the cheese mixture.

Add the softened cream cheese, shredded sharp white cheddar, and Dijon mustard to the bowl of a food processor. Blend for about 1 minute, stopping to scrape down the sides if needed, until the mixture is smooth and well combined.

2. Shape the cheese ball.

Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on your work surface and spoon the cheese mixture into the center. Gather the edges of the plastic wrap and twist them together, using the wrap to shape the mixture into a ball.

3. Chill until firm.

Refrigerate the wrapped cheese ball for at least 1 hour. This gives it time to firm up, making it easier to coat and serve.

4. Prepare the coating.

While the cheese ball chills, chop the pistachios and dried cranberries and stir thrm together in a small bowl.

5. Coat and serve.

Unwrap the chilled cheese ball and place it on a serving tray or platter. Gently press the cranberry and pistachio mixture over the surface, covering as much of the cheese as possible. Serve with your favorite crackers, crostini, or fresh vegetables.

Serving Suggestions

This festive cheese ball is best served at room temperature and pairs well with a variety of dippers, so you can easily build a holiday appetizer platter around it.

  • Crackers: A classic choice that lets the creamy cheese and sweet-tart coating shine.
  • Crostini: Toasted baguette slices are sturdy enough for a generous schmear.
  • Pretzels: Their salty crunch is a great match with the tangy cheese.
  • Apple slices: Apples are a natural match for both cream cheese and cheddar.

For a holiday party, arrange the cheese ball in the center of a platter with a variety of crackers and fresh vegetables around the edges.

Storage and Make Ahead

Store leftover cheese ball in an airtight container or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for up to 3 days.

You can prepare and shape the cheese ball up to 1 day in advance. Keep it wrapped in the refrigerator and add the cranberry-pistachio coating closer to serving time for the best texture and appearance.
