This easy green goddess salad dressing recipe is one of my favorite ways to use up an abundance of herbs. The original green goddess dressing was created in San Francisco at the Palace Hotel in the 1920s. That original recipe calls for a baso of mayo along with herbs and an anchovy fillet for a hit of umami flavor but I’ve adjusted my recipe to have that same savory flavor with ingredients you can easily find in the store.

Today you’ll find as many recipes for green goddess dressing as there are cooks who make it. I prefer using Greek yogurt as a base for a dressing that is light, yet still creamy (you can use sour cream or mayonnaise if you’d like, or replace half of the ogurt with a ripe avocado). I also kept this recipe simple using just parsley and chives (both of which are widely available) but you can use whatever herbs you have on hand including basil, cilantro, oregano and more. This dressing is a great way to use up any extra herbs hanging out in your fridge.

Green goddess dressing is wonderful on salads, but this bright and herbaceous sauce that livens up anything you use it with. Serve as a dip with raw veggies like carrots or broccoli,  as a spread for sandwiches and wraps or drizzle over your favorite grain bowl or protein like chicken and salmon. I’ve even used it to make my delicious Green Goddess Pasta Salad!

Green Goddess Dressing Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Greek yogurt
  • Flat leaf parsley
  • Fresh chives
  • Red wine vinegar
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Dijon mustard
  • Kosher salt
  • Ground black pepper

Cooking Tips and Variations

  • I’ve made this homemade greek goddess dressing with greek yogurt since I always have have some in my fridge but you can also use mayonnaise or sour cream for the dressing if that’s what you like.
  • Feel free to change up the herbs in the greek goddess dressing. Fresh herbs like basil, mint, dill, tarragon, cilantro and oregano would be great options as well as a clove of garlic or 1 tablespoon of capers.
  • Substitute white wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar or champagne vinegar for the red wine vinegar.
  • The original green goddess dressing recipe calls for for anchovies. If you want to stick to tradition you can add in 1-2 anchovy fillets or 1 tablespoon of anchovy paste.

How to Make Green Goddess Dressing

This homemade salad dressing comes together in a snap and is incredibly simple to make Add the Greek yogurt, parsley, chives, vinegar, dijon mustard, salt and pepper to a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth. Transfer to a clean glass jar or container and serve as desired.

Storage

Store the dressing in a clean glass jar (like these these glass jars from Weck and also these small mason jars ) or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. If the dressing separates just shake the jar or stir to combine before serving.
