BBQ wings are one of my favorite wing recipes for game day, parties or even dinner! Whether you use whole chicken wings, drumettes, wingettes or a mix you can make this easy chicken wing recipe in either the oven or the air fryer. A great alternative to classic buffalo wings (for anyone who finds them too spicy) these wings have great flavor and are the perfect addition to any cookout, game day or super bowl party. Make these wings with your homemade BBQ sauce (like my Coffee BBQ Sauce or Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce) or you can use your favorite store-bought sauce.

Chicken Wings are one of my favorite party appetizers to make! Looking for more chicken wing recipes? If you want the juiciest wings consider using my brine for chicken wings. Check out my Hot Honey Chicken Wings, Garlic Parmesan Wings,  Zesty Tequila Lime Chicken Wings and Smoked Chicken Wings.

Cooking Tips and Serving Suggestions

  • The secret to crispy chicken wings wings is to pat them dry with a paper towel,  toss with baking powder and cook them under high heat
  • You can substitute the spice with your favorite chili powder blend
  • Feel free to use your favorite storebout or homemade barbecue sauce
  • Any time you make chicken wings make sure they’ve cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F using a digital thermometer
  • Serve these crispy bbq wings with blue cheese dressing, ranch, carrots or celery

How to Make Crispy BBQ Chicken WIngs in the Oven

Using paper towels pat the chicken wings dry and put them in a large bowl. Add in the spice mixture and toss to combine, ensuring the wings are fully coated. Place the wings in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet lined with foil and a wire rack.

Bake the wings for 20 minutes. Flip the wings and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. (If using an air fryer, place the chicken wings into air fryer and cook for 8 minutes. Flip and cook for an additional 8-10 minutes.) While the wings are cooking heat your favorite bbq sauce in a small saucepan over low heat.

Once the wings are done cooking transfer them to a large bowl, add in the barbecue sauce and toss to combine. Serve as desired.

Storage

Store leftover chicken wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or you can place them in a freezer safe bag and freeze them for up to 3 months.

Reheat chicken wings in the oven at 400 degrees F for 10-20 minutes until heated through and crispy. For frozen wings make sure to thaw them in the fridge before reheating.
