After my sister moved to Germany I had to visit her, and of course we had to experience the magic of the Christmas markets! Perusing the stalls for handmade goods, nibbling on traditional goodies like lebkucken and warming up with a mug of hot wine spiced with the flavors of the holidays we enjoyed every bit of the quintessential European Christmas market experience.

Since I can’t jet off to Germany every holiday season I brought a bit of the Christmas market spirit home with this homemade mulled wine recipe. It’s incredibly easy to make and perfect for any holiday gathering. For more delicious drinks to make for the holidays take a look at my Eggnog Martini, Cranberry Aperol Spritz and Pomegranate Mimosa.

Ingredients

  • Orange
  • Granulated sugar
  • Whole cloves
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Star anise
Mulled Wine (Gluhwein)

Cooking Tips and Variations

  • The best wine to use is a medium bodied red wine like merlot, zinfandel, syrah, grenache or cabernet sauvignon
  • You can also use white wine for a lighter but equally festive drink
  • Feel free to add or substitute some of your favorite warming spices like fresh ginger, cardamom pods, allspice or nutmeg
  • Change up the sweetness by using honey or maple syrup in place of the sugar
  • Use brandy, whiskey or rum (aged or spiced) in place of the orange liqueur to customize our mulled wine
  • Need to make a big batch? You can easily double or triple this recipe and use a large pot or use a slow cooker if you prefer not to use the stove

How to Make Mulled Wine

Mulled Wine (Gluhwein) - Ingredients
Mulled Wine (Gluhwein) - preparation

Making mulled wine is incredibly easy and with citrus and holiday spices this classic recipe have your kitchen smelling like a Eurpoean Christmas market. Combine ingredients in a medium saucepan and stir to combine. Cook over medium heat until the wine reaches a simmer, sitrring occasionally. Reduce to low heat and simmer  at a gentle bubble for 10 minutes (take care not to let the wine boil as this will boil out the alcohol).

Strain out the orange slices and spices.Serve in heatlproof mugs or glasses, garnish with additional orange slices, fresh cranberries and spices if desired.
