If you ask me there’s a lot to love about pomegranates. Their seeds are fabulous little jewels that bring brightness and crunch to anything you add them to and their deep garnet color is just stunning. Pomegranate juice tastes amazing and a great addition to cocktails. With just four ingredients this Pomegranate Sidecar Cocktail is sure to become one of your favorite drinks.

History of the Sidecar Cocktail

There are a few stories of the origin of the sidecar cocktail but the most popular theory hold that it was invented at the Ritz Hotel in Paris toward the end of WWI. A military officer would frequent the bar at the Ritz and would be driven there in a motorcycle sidecar; the bartender created a cocktail for this officer that included brandy, Cointreau and lemon juice. While brandy is the traditional spirit used for the sidecar it’s common to find variations using bourbon or whiskey.( If you want some other great fall or winter cocktails take a look at my Pomegranate Mimosa, Cranberry Orange Whiskey Sour or Apple Cider Martini).

How to make a Pomegranate Sidecar Cocktail

Pomegranate Sidecar Cocktail

This cocktail is quite simple to make and is wonderfully balanced. In a cocktail shaker ( I absolutely love this beautiful cocktail shaker) add pomegranate juice, bourbon or whiskey, Cointreau and lemon juice (this jigger makes measuring a snap) along with some ice. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds or until well chilled, pour into an elegant cocktail glass and garnish with lemon peel.
