Chocolate chip cookies are a classic but that doesnโ€™t mean we can’t elevate them with a few unexpected twists. Toasty browned butter, a good dose of matcha powder, and creamy white chocolate chips that these traditional cookies from great to divine. What is Matcha?

Matcha is a powdered green tea made from the tea plant Camellia sinensis. Dating back to the 11th century in China matcha became popular with Zen Buddhist monks who then brought the practice to Japan. Today tea grown for matcha is shade grown, which stimulates the production of chlorophyl. This results in matchaโ€™s signature bright green color, rich flavor and high level of antioxidants.

Traditionally matcha is prepared in a ceremonial manner, utilizing a tea bowl with a wooden whisk (known as a chasen), whisking in a M pattern to fully incorporate the matcha powder and produce a smooth, foamy texture. Today matcha has gained popularity worldwide and can be found in lattes, smoothies and desserts ( like these cookies!).

How to Make Matcha White Chocolate Chip Cookies

To make these cookies you’ll start with browned butter. Making brown butter is quite simple but you do have to pay attention as it only take a few seconds to go from perfect brown butter to hot burned mess. When preparing brown butter itโ€™s best to use a light colored pan so you can best monitor the color of the butter to avoid over cooking it. To make brown butter for this recipe heat unsalted butter in a medium saucepan or skillet while stirring constantly. The butter will begin to darken in color and itโ€™s typical for the butter to foam a bit on top. Cook the butter until it becomes amber in color with a distinct nutty aroma. Remove the pan from heat and transfer to bowl to stop the cooking process. Allow the butter to come to room temperature or chill in the refrigerator.

In a large mixing bowl beat together the cooled brown butter, brown sugar and white sugar until creamy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and the vanilla extract. In a separate bowl whisk together flour, matcha powder, kosher salt and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes or up to 24 hours.

Preheat oven to 350ยฐ. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and scoop out dough with a cookie scoop placing cookies at least 2 inches apart. Bake for 10 minutes or until the edges have just become golden. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
