History of the Hot Toddy
The hot toddy has it’s origins somewhere you might not expect. India! The earliest references from the 17th century in British-controlled India mention the “taddy”, a beverage from fermented palm sap. This eventually morphed into a beverage made with liquor, sugar, spices and hot water (sound familiar?). The Brits brought this back home where it became a hit throughout Britain and Scotland utilizing scotch, later the toddy made it’s way to America where rum and brandy became to liquors of choice. Today countless variations of hot toddies exist to warm your spirit on a cold winter day.
How to make a Hot Toddy
Making a hot toddy couldn’t be easier, and using hot honey (use my recipe for easy homemade hot honey or use premade hot honey) adds a kick of spice that makes your toddy even more warming. First you want to get your water heating up, either using a small pan on the stove or an electric kettle ( I love this kettle and use it for so much more than tea!). Add whiskey, hot honey and lemon juice to a mug and then top it off with your hot water. Stir to make sure the honey is dissolved and enjoy!
