Caprese salad, or insalata caprese, is a simple Italian salad consisting of tomato, basil and mozzarella. No one knows you created the caprese salad but there are a few theories. One story posits that in the 1920s a patriotic mason created the dish to honor the colors of the Italian flag. Another story states the salad was created at the Hotel Quisisana in Capri.
What is Burrata?
Burrata is a fresh cheese from Italy made from cow’s or buffalo milk. An outer shell of fresh mozzarella is filled with cream and cheese curds and formed into a ball, it is typically found in containers packed in a light brine. To serve burrata allow it to come to room temperature to best enjoy it’s creamy texture.

How to Make Caprese Salad with Burrata
Since this is such a simple recipe make sure to get your hands on the best ingredients you can find. Fresh heirloom tomatoes, creamy burrata, extra virgin olive oil and flaky sea salt take your basic caprese salad from good to great. While traditionally caprese salad doesn’t always have balsamic I find a drizzle of a good aged balsamic or a balsamic reduction elevates the caprese salad even further.
Slice the tomatoes and arrange them on a platter. Scatter the basil on top of the tomatoes. Drizzle olive oil over the tomatoes and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place the burrata on top of the tomatoes and if desired drizzle with balsamic vinegar or this creamy balsamic dressing.
