No drink puts me in vacation mode quite like a mojito. Light and refreshing, one sip and Iโ€™m transported to a white sand beach with palm trees swaying in the breeze. This classic cocktail gets even better with the addition of fresh strawberries Discover this easy Strawberry Mojito recipe for any time you need a tropical getaway in a glass.

History of the Mojito

Traditionally the classic mojito is a combination of lime juice, mint, sugar, rum and sparkling water though you can find many different flavor variations (including my passionfruit mojito and mango mojito). The mojito is one of the most popular cocktails to have originated in Cuba though there are competing stories (though I suspect thereโ€™s a bit of truth in both versions) in itโ€™s origins.

One story holds that the mojito was created by African slaves working the Cuban sugar cane fields in the 18th century. An older story goes back to the 1500s, where after an unsuccessful raid, the crew of Sir Francis Drake was suffering from scurvy and given a tonic by the local indigenous population. This tonic consisted of lime, fermented cane juice (aguariente de cana) and mint. The mojito later became one of the most popular cocktails thanks to Ernest Hemingwayโ€™s love of the drink served at Le Bodeguita del Medioย , a bar in Havana.

Strawberry Mojito

Ingredients

  • fresh strawberries
  • fresh mint leaves
  • granulated sugar or simple syrup
  • lime juice
  • white rum
  • ice
  • sparkling water

How to Make a Strawberry Mojito

The ultimate patio drink, fresh strawberry mojitos are one of the easiest strawberry cocktails to make at home and a fun twist on the classic mojito recipe. White rum (also called silver rum) is a standard of most home bars, and strawberries, limes, mint and sparkling water are easily available. In a tall glass muddle together mint, strawberries and simple syrup. Add in fresh lime juice and rum and stir with a cocktail spoon to combine. Add ice and top with sparkling water (club soda). Garnish with additional sprigs of mint, lime slices or strawberry slices if desired.

For a pitcher muddle the strawberries, mint and simple syrup with the back of a wooden spoon. Add in the lime juices and light rum and sparkling water and stir. Divide amongst 8 glasses  (I recommend a highball or collins glass). Garnish with additional mint sprigs or strawberries.
