This Strawberry Agua Fresca, also known as agua de fresa, is a delicious and refreshing fruit drink popular throughout Mexico. Using either fresh or frozen strawberries and a handful of ingredients this easy recipe is the perfect sip for summer.

Agua fresca (translated as fresh water in Spanish) is one of my favorite drink recipes for using an abundance of fresh fruit at peak ripeness. Popular throughout Mexico, agua fresca is a refreshing drink make from blended fresh fruit, water, lime juice and a little sugar (though you can also use honey or agave nectar). I’ve been to Mexico multiple times and one of my favorite things is seeing the vendors in the markets selling countless vareities of freshly made agua frescas in every color of the rainbow.

In addition to strawberry other popular flavors include pineapple agua fresca, watermelon agua fresca, mango, cucumber and hibiscus (jamaica). It’s not overly sweet and allows the taste of the fruit to really shine. I think agua frescas are the perfect drink to enjoy during the summer.

Ingredients

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Fresh lime juice
  • Granulated sugar
  • Water
Strawberry Agua Fresca

Preparation Tips and Variations

  • Feel free to use fresh berries or frozen berries that have been thawed
  • Instead of sugar you can use your choice of sweetener like agave nectar or honey.
  • Agua fresca is one of the best non-alcoholic beverages but you can amp things up with a bit of tequila, vodka, gin or white rum for an easy and delicious cocktail
  • For a fun twist you can make a creamy strawberry agua fresca. Replace 2 cups of water with 1 15oz can of sweetened condensed milk (and omit the additional sugar)

How to Make Strawberry Agua Fresca

Strawberry Agua Fresca Ingredients
Strawberry Agua Fresca preparation

Making agua fresca from scratch couldn’t be more simple. In a high speed blender add the strawberries, the juice of 1 lime, 1/4 cup sugar and 2 cups of water to a high speed blender (I love this blender) and blend until smooth. Strain the agua fresca through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher or a carafe. Refrigerate until chilled and serve as desired.

Storage

Store this agua fresca in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Some settling is normal, just stir a little bit before serving.
