Ingredients

  • Water
  • Brown sugar
  • Pumpkin puree
  • Vanilla extract
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Ground ginger
  • Ground cloves

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Small fine mesh strainer
  • Small simple syrup bottle, tulip jars, or mason jars

Cooking Tips and Variations

  • Use 1.5 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice in place of the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves
  • Don’t use pumpkin pie filling in place of pumpkin puree. Pumpkin pie filling contains additional sweeteners and spices and will change the flavor and consistency of the syrup.
  • Substitute almond extract for the vanilla extract for a slightly different flavor
  • Feel free to use either canned pumpkin or make your own pumpkin puree from scratch

How to Make Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup

Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup Ingredients
  • Combine the ingredients. Add the water, brown sugar, pumpkin puree, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves to a small saucepan. Whisk until combined.
  • Simmer. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the brown sugar has completely dissolved.
  • Let it steep. Remove the saucepan from the heat, cover and let the mixture steep for 20 minutes. This gives the spices time to infuse the syrup.
  • Strain. Pour the syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean glass jar or bottle, pressing gently on the solids to extract the liquid.
  • Cool and store. Let the syrup cool, then refrigerate in an airtight container.

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte

Add 1–2 tablespoons of pumpkin spice simple syrup to 1 cup of hot coffee or 2 shots of espresso. Stir in ½–1 cup of steamed milk or your favorite non-dairy milk and top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg.

Storage

This homemade pumpkin spice syrup can be stored in a glass jar or bottle in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
