It’s the end of October and I’ve been craving a cocktail that’s seasonal but not over the top gory or kitschy. Enter the blood orange margarita. The name is appropriately spooky for Halloween and a great option for celebrating Dia de Los Muertes, or Day of the Dead. A familiar favorite with a fruity twist this blood orange margarita is easy to make and very easy to drink.

Blood Orange Margarita

What are blood oranges?

Blood oranges are a variety of orange with flesh that is dark red in color lending to the fruit’s name. This ruby toned orange has notes of raspberry flavor and is in season in winter and early spring. Blood oranges originated in the southern Mediterranean and are especially popular in Sicily and Spain. The three most popular varieties of blood oranges are Moro, Tarocco and Sanguinello.

Types of Tequila

Blood Orange Margarita

Tequila is made from the heart of the blue agave plant and is made in the primarily in the Mexican state of Jalisco as well as a few neighboring states. Tequila Blanco is unaged tequila while Tequila Joven is a blend of aged and unaged tequila. There are several varieties of aged tequila. Reposado has been aged at least two months, Anejo has ben aged in oak barrels at least a year and and Extra Anejo has been aged at least 3 years.

How to make a Blood Orange Margarita

Blood Orange Margarita

This blood orange margarita is a riff off the classic margarita recipe. I start off by rimming a glass with with salt. Combine blood orange juice ( you can bottled juice in a well stocked grocery store or juice your own), tequila ( I especially love the caramel noted of reposado, but use any tequila you’d like), lime juice and Cointreau into a shaker with ice. Shake for at least 30 seconds, pour into your salt rimmed glass and enjoy!
