One of my favorite things about late summer is that itโ€™s blackberry season and my Blackberry Bourbon Smash is the perfect drink to celebrate. Pair sweet blackberries with smoky bourbon, fresh mint and a bit of soda water to lighten things up and youโ€™ve got a delicious patio sip. My Blackberry Bourbon Smash is fresh, bubbly and great way to highlight fresh summer fruit.

A smash is a simple classic cocktail popular in the American south. Fresh in-season fruit is muddled with sugar and sometimes fresh herbs. In place of sugar simple syrup, honey or maple syrup can also be used. Bourbon (or your spirit of choice, smashes have endless variations) is added along with seltzer and plenty of ice. A mint julep is a kind of smash as is a mojito (take a look at my Strawberry Mojito!). The result is a refreshing drink great for summer evenings.

Ingredients

  • Blackberries
  • Bourbon
  • Lime juice
  • Simple syrup
  • Seltzer

Variations

  • Aside from a good high-quality bourbon you can also use your favorite whiskey, gin, rum or tequila
  • You can use a flavored simple syrup (like my ginger honey simple syrup or vanilla simple syrup) or 1/2-1 teaspoon of white or demera sugar for a bit of sweetness
  • Use blueberries or raspberries (or a mix!) in place of fresh blackberries
  • Muddle fresh herbs like basil or mint with the blackberries for an herbal twist
  • Top with ginger beer instead of sparkling water to give your drink a kick

How to make a blackberry bourbon smash cocktail

Bourbon smashes are typically served in an old fashioned or rocks glass, youโ€™ll need a cocktail shaker as well as a muddler for the actual smashing. Place four blackberries and simple syrup (or sugar if using) sugar in a cocktail shaker; muddle until all the blackberries are broken down. Add the bourbon and fresh lime juice and shake well to combine. Strain this into a glass with ice. Top with seltzer and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
