Nothing pleases me more than a cocktail that’s unexpected that also happens to be quite simple, and a white port and tonic fits that bill. Sweet Portuguese wine is perfectly complimented by slightly tart and bubbly tonic and instantly transports me to a sun swept terrace in Lisbon. Discover how easy and utterly delicious this White Port and Tonic Cocktail can be.

There are few places I’ve travelled to that I fell immediately enamored with as I did Lisbon. Mosaic cobblestone sidewalks weave their way through hillside streets alongside the iconic yellow trams. Cafes serve up the freshest seafood while bakeries delight with pastel de nata egg tarts. The best way to end the day is watching the sunset with a drink in hand, and this is how I first experienced the white port and tonic.

What is White Port Wine?

White Port and Tonic

All port wines come from the Duoro Valle in northern Portugal. Similar to ruby and tawny ports (which are made from red grapes) white port wine is a fortified wine where clear brandy is added white wine to stop fermentation. This fortified is then aged in either steel tanks (which results in a bright sweet finish) or aged in wood barrels which gives white port depth and complexity. White port accounts for about 10% of all port production, common white port grapes include Malvasia Fina, Viosinho and Cรณdega do Larinho.

How to Make White Port and Tonic

White Port and Tonic

Making a white port and tonic couldn’t be more simple. Take 3 oz of white port and add to a glass with ice and a slice or two of orange. Top with tonic and garnish with a sprig of rosemary. Cocktails really don’t get much easier (or more delicious) than this!

Excellent post! This is such a refreshing summer cocktail. I didn’t discover it until we arrived here in Portugal this spring. It’s an extremely popular dink and available everywhere. Why not make it at home?
