  • 1 9 x 13 baking dish
  • 1 large mixing bowl

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 1 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon divided
  • 4 apples peeled and sliced
  • 1 16 oz loaf challah or brioche bread cut into 12 slices
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup apple cider
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Stir inthe brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon until fully combined. Add in the sliced apples and cook for 10 minutes or until the apples have softened.
  • Transfer the apples to the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Reserve remaining caramel sauce to serve with the finished french toast. Layer the sliced bread over the apples.
  • In a large mixing bowl whisk together the milk, apple cider, eggs, remaining 1 tsp cinnamon and vanilla extract. Pour the milk mixture evenly over the bread. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or up to overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Remove the French toast from the refrigerator and allow to sit at room temperature for 15 minutes. Bake for 35 minutes or until the top of the French toast has turned golden. Cool for 5 minutes before serving. Heat the reserved caramel in the microwave for 30 seconds and drizzle over the French toast.
