Frozen puff pastry dough is an ingredient I always have on hand and makes baking these blueberry danishes from scratch is incredibly easy with bakery-style results (my Strawberry Cream Cheese Danish recipe has gotten rave reviews!).

Puff pastry is a laminated dough that is folded with butter which creates a pastry that is flaky with lots of thin layers. Excellent puff pastry is available at most supermarkets (I highly recommend getting an all-butter puff pastry, Dalfour and Trader Joe’s are my favortie brands) and is a great shortcut for creating desserts and appetizers, For more great puff pastry recipes take a look at my Asparagus Puff Pastry Tart, Mushroom Puff Pastry Tart and Everything Bagel Smoked Salmon Puff Pastry Bites.

Baking Tips

  • Make sure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature before mixing
  • Feel free to substitute almond extract in place of the vanilla extract
  • You can customize your danish pastries by using cherries or raspberries in place of the blueberries.
  • If you’d like a citrusy glaze replace the milk with lemon juice

How to Make Blueberry Danish

Thanks to using store-bought puff pastry this danish recipe comes together in a snapPreheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl, using a hand mixer, beat together cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar and vanilla until creamy (about 1-2 minutes). In another small bowl stir together the fresh berries with the blueberry jam and lemon zest until just combined.

Place the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out slightly and then, with a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the puff pastry in half lengthwise, then cut each half into 4 equal pieces (you will have a total of 8 rectangles). Use a knife to score (but not completely cut through) a border into each piece and use a fork to prick the center of each square several times.

Transfer the pastries to a baking sheet lined with a silicon baking mat or parchment paper. Spoon the cream cheese mixture within the border, then spread the blueberries on top of the cream cheese mixture.  Combine the egg and water to create an egg wash then brush over the edges of the dough.

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the danishes are puffed up and golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes on a wire rack. Stir together the powdered sugar, remaining 1/2 tsp vanilla extract and 1 tbsp of milk. Drizzle the glaze over the danishes and serve as desired.
