As late summer transitions to fall the best desserts feature ingredients that bridge both seasons. Juicy blackberries meet cinnamon spiced apples resulting in a delightful dessert that gets better with a buttery walnut streusel. This Apple Blackberry Crumble is an easy dessert that’s delicious any time of year.

Popular throughout Ireland and a favorite of Mary Berry (of Great British Bakeoff fame) there are as many variations of apple blackberry crumbles as there are bakers who make them. When it comes to apples the more cinnamon the better so I have a double dose in both the fruit and crumble topping. Instead of sautรฉing the apples before baking I prefer to mix them with a little sugar and let them macerate for at least 10 minutes to release some juice. I love the slightly crisp texture of the apples this way (and there’s one less dish to clean this way).

While the apples are macerating prepare the streusel topping. Add oats, brown sugar, flour, walnuts, cinnamon and salt to a bowl and stir combine. Add the softened cubed butter and mix in with a pastry blender, knife or your hands until the streusel topping has a crumbly texture. Sprinkle the topping over the apples. Transfer the crumble to the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly and the streusel is golden.
